Best Jaw Surgeons In London
Some patients may require jaw surgery in order to correct the position of the teeth and provide a functioning bite. The supporting bones of the jaws must be in the correct position.
If this is not the case, orthodontics alone will not correct the bite. Surgery will be required to move the jaws into the proper position so the teeth then meet correctly. Patients seek jaw surgery at our Harley Street practice for a number of reasons, including;
- Difficulty in eating and speaking
- Disproportionately large upper or lower jaws
- Long face
- Facial asymmetries & Chin abnormalities.
Thankfully, with Elleven Dental, this doesn’t have to be a complex operation. We’re friends with the best jaw surgeons and are used to working in close collaboration to get optimum results for our shared patients.
Book a consultation with Dr Shivani Patel to discuss your jaw surgery requirements. She is trained as an orthodontist to consultant level and has a lot of experience in these multidisciplinary cases.
At elleven Dental Wellness, we always work in the best interests of the patient. It is important to understand that with jaw surgery you may experience some side effects, whether you are having class 1, 2 or 3 surgery.
You will have some swelling and bruising after the operation. This will rapidly begin to subside over the first 2-3 weeks. For operations on the lower jaw, it is fairly common to have some numbness of the lower lip. In a very small number of cases, a residual area of numbness may remain. This does not affect the movement of the lips, only the feeling in it, in a similar way to an injection at the dentist. After the operation, you will have to take it easy for 2-3 weeks. You should therefore expect to be off college or work for at least that length of time.

Class 2 jaw surgery for overbite
A class 2 malocclusion (also known as an overbite) is where the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth.
If left untreated, it can lead to problems with chewing, speaking and, sometimes, breathing difficulty. And the lower part of your face may start to look tired and drawn – making you look older than you are.
A slight overbite can often be corrected through non-surgical means, using braces or Invisalign treatment to gradually reposition the lower jaws. However, using orthodontic treatment alone can take years to achieve the desired results – making jaw surgery in London one of the most effective treatment options.
Class 2 corrective jaw surgery can help to align the upper and lower teeth and jaws – preventing discomfort, bone damage, excessive wear of the front teeth and tooth loss.
During your initial consultation for jaw surgery, your oral surgeon will use X-rays, photographs and 3D models to evaluate the severity of your overbite. They can even demonstrate how orthognathic surgery will correct the issue – having a positive impact on your facial function and appearance.
Class 3 jaw surgery for underbite
An underbite is a type of malocclusion where your upper teeth rest behind your bottom teeth when you bite down – causing your lower jaw to protrude and creating the appearance of a more prominent chin.
Orthodontic treatment, such as fixed braces with metal brackets and wires, can be used to treat a mild underbite, straightening the teeth to disguise any misalignment. However, the jaw position will remain the same.
For patients with severe skeletal discrepancies, a combination of orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery or bimaxillary orthognathic surgery will be required to achieve optimum results.
Class 3 jaw surgery is typically performed under general anaesthetic.
The surgeon will move the bottom jaw bone back into the correct position and bring the top jaw forward. Both the upper and lower jaws will be secured by tiny plates and pins that remain under the gum.
After undergoing jaw surgery for an underbite, small elastic bands are used between the top and bottom brace to allow the bite to settle into the correct occlusion. These may need to stay in place for several months after your orthognathic surgery – but your specialist orthodontist will check and change them to ensure your treatment plan stays on track.
Double jaw surgery London
Oral surgeons often perform orthognathic treatment on one jaw at a time. However, double jaw surgery is when they perform surgery on both jaws simultaneously.
The goal of double jaw surgery (bimaxillary osteotomy) is to address and correct jaw discrepancies and deformities, including a protruding jaw which can lead to an abnormal bite, otherwise known as a malocclusion.
Ideal for patients with an unusually long face or chin (facial asymmetry), our surgeon will resize, reshape and reposition the upper and lower jaws to improve their function and appearance.
Double jaw surgery in London can also benefit those who suffer from obstructive sleep conditions, such as sleep apnoea. This occurs when the space between your airways becomes too narrow, making it difficult for you to breathe. During the procedure, both jaws will be moved forward to create more space in your airways – effectively improving your ability to sleep and your quality of life.
Jaw surgery UK cost
Several factors determine the cost of corrective jaw surgery in the UK. These include the location of the dental practice, the type of orthognathic surgery required (e.g. class 1, 2 or 3), the complexity of your jaw disorder and the maxillofacial surgeon’s experience.
Although you can find out more about our fees here, at elleven Dental, we treat every patient on a case-by-case basis. This means that our experienced clinician will perform a thorough assessment of your jaws before we discuss treatment options and the associated costs with your jaw surgery London.
Jaw surgery recovery
The recovery time is different for every patient, but most people will stay in hospital for 1 or 2 nights after having orthognathic jaw surgery.
When you go home, it’s important someone stays with you (at least for the first few days) in case you don’t feel well.
It can take anywhere between 6 and 8 weeks for the jaw bone(s) to fully heal following orthognathic treatment. It’s normal to feel soreness in the first 2-3 weeks after your surgery and any swelling should usually subside within 3 weeks.
You should be able to open and close your mouth fully immediately after jaw surgery. However, it’s best to start with a soft diet (including soft foods) before returning to your normal diet when you feel less discomfort.
To aid recovery post-jaw surgery, you must take any prescribed or advised medications and drink plenty of water and fluids. Getting enough sleep each night will support your recovery, too.
Although you will be able to shower on the second day after jaw surgery, hot, prolonged showers are off-limits as these increase the risk of bleeding.
Exercise and heavy lifting that can raise your blood pressure or pulse must also be avoided for at least the first month following your orthognathic surgery, as your blood vessels are still healing.
Our surgeon will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to follow post-surgery – ensuring optimal results are achieved with minimal pain and discomfort.
Frequently Asked Questions
If the jaws are to be moved into the correct position, it is important your teeth are moved so that they meet properly after surgery.
Fixed braces are used prior to jaw surgery because they permit the most accurate positioning of the teeth prior to the operation.
No, they remain in position during and after the operation for a number of months. During the operation they help the oral surgeon position the jaws correctly. After the operation they help the orthodontist fine tune the bite with elastics.
The majority of operations will be done from inside your mouth.
This varies between 2-5 days.
It usually takes 2- 2 1/2 years, but will vary on how severe your case is. Failed or cancelled appointments or repeated breakages will add to the overall treatment time.
