To celebrate World Smile Day 2016, we commissioned a survey that revealed the increasing importance placed on a good set of pearly whites and which celebrity smiles have caught the eye of the British public.

The survey revealed:

  • Love at first smile – 57% of respondents say teeth/a smile were the first thing they noticed on meeting a new person of the opposite sex
  • Teeth envy – 84% felt there was more pressure to have a perfect smile due to the rise in adults and celebrities seeking orthodontic treatment
  • All white now – 71% stated that they would like to have whiter teeth and that yellowness was a cause for concern, highlighting our increasing awareness of our teeth
  • Invest to impress – 20% stated they’d spend more than £3,000 on improving their teeth. People are also prepared to sacrifice other luxuries such as a gym membership (45%) and or a holiday (19%) in return for dental treatment to perfect their smile!

When asked which female celebrities they deemed to have the best smile, the UK public voted the top three as Julia Roberts (22%), Kate Middleton (19%) and Cheryl Cole (14%). When asked the same question about male celebrities, David Beckham received 24% of the vote, George Clooney came in second with 21% and elleven patient, David Gandy, ranked third with 19%.

The survey reconfirms just how important a perfect smile is.
