It’s natural to have questions before you begin a treatment programme.  And, when it comes to braces, there is one question we get asked a lot: how long will I need to wear the brace?

It’s completely natural to have concerns before you begin any dental treatment and in this regard – no matter how much you want to achieve your perfect smile – wearing a brace is no different.  One of the questions we get asked a lot is how long you’ll need to wear a brace.

The answer to this isn’t always straight forward.

It depends on the type of treatment and the brace system you choose.

And, of course, it depends on your teeth – what they are like now, how many teeth you’d like to straighten, how much movement is desired and what you would like your smile to look like after treatment.

However, the short answer is that, typically, you’ll need to wear your brace for around 12-18 months.

A Personal Consultation

We’ll be able to give you an estimate about for how long you’ll need to wear your brace when you come to your first consultation with us.  This is the time we’ll discuss what you want to achieve and which brace system is going to best suit you.

Then, while you are wearing your brace, you’ll have regular check-ups with us so you will know how your treatment is progressing.

After we’ve checked on the movement of your teeth, we can update your treatment schedule based on your own treatment progress, so you will know when you can expect your braces to be removed.

This will always be agreed in consultation with you.

Your Brace: What Are the Options?

Damon Orthodontic Braces

Damon braces are passive self-ligating braces that don’t require traditional elastic or metal “ties”, instead they have a unique slide mechanism that reduces pressure on teeth so treatment is more comfortable.  Using this system, you can choose a traditional metal or a clear brace and treatment.

Depending on the treatment required, treatment usually takes around 14 months.

Lingual Orthodontic Braces

Lingual braces are fixed braces that placed behind your teeth – so they are the perfect fixed brace system for anyone who is worried about people noticing they are having orthodontic treatment.  It really is the closest to invisible you can get.

Typically, a course of treatment will last between 6 and 9 months.

Invisalign Orthodontic Braces

Invisalign braces are clear, removable aligners.  The benefits of them are that they are clear and therefore very discreet and difficult to spot.  You can take them out for eating or brushing your teeth, so you need to be motivated to achieve your smile – because you will need to make sure you wear them.

Typically, a course of treatment will last between 6 and 9 months.

SureSmile Orthodontic Braces

SureSmile is a new way of crafting precision braces.  It makes use of advanced 3D imaging, virtual simulations and customised brace wires to produce clear, removable aligners.  The removable aligners are very discreet and fast – typically treatment times are reduced by 30%.
