On Sunday, the British Academy Television Awards Ceremony (aka The BAFTAs) will take place. So this week, while the Red Carpet is being dusted off, the nominees and their peers will be visiting their couturiers, hairdressers, manicurists and make-up artists of choice.

A feeding frenzy for the media, outfits will be described and judged, hairdos will get the thumbs up or down, and pearly whites (or not, as the case may be!) will be scrutinised. Indeed, many a celebrity has put time and effort into achieving a dazzling smile, in the knowledge that you’re never properly dressed without one. Earlier this year, the coverage of the Grammys caught my attention because the press was atwitter (and a-Twitter) when 45-year-old singer Faith Hill debuted her clear braces in splendid style; and she continues to rock the look in public.

Historically, orthodontic treatments tended to be the bane of the tweens and teens, but here we are in the 21st century and both children and adults are embracing the best, nuisance-free orthodontics available. Actually, as far as I am concerned, adults are often the most compliant patients.

Faith is the perfect example of why this may be so; on US radio station KNIX she recently commented: ‘”I had braces as a kid. I forgot to wear my retainer.’ The great news is that with the embarrassment associated with braces far, far behind us, modern dental techniques allow everyone the opportunity to be happy with their smile, irrespective of whether or not they’re destined for the Red Carpet in the not too distant future!
